Abstract<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pragmatics is fundamentally based on studying language in its use and application within the context of communication. It incorporates several key concepts including speech acts that originated in Austin’s studies; and were later developed by his student Seattle, who refined them into their final, standardized form. Speech acts have become a core component of pragmatic studies, as they encompass actions that play a vital role in the exchange of ideas and information among individuals. Therefore, this article aims to address several questions related to speech acts and the actions they involve in poetic discourse. The analysis draws upon Al-Mutanabbi’s elegy, L\u0101miyyat al-\u1e24ij\u0101\u02be composed in mourning for Sayf al-Dawla\u2019s mother. Examining this poem from the perspective of speech acts requires identifying a range of performative acts within the poem including declarative acts, expressive acts, acts of lamentation, acts of praise, and acts of condolence.
