Le parcours du protagoniste \u2013 en qu\u00eate du myst\u00e9rieux cheikh soufi Zaabal\u00e2w\u00ee \u2013 devient une m\u00e9taphore existentielle symbolisant la recherche incessante de l\u2019homme pour la gu\u00e9rison et le sens dans un monde min\u00e9 par le doute et l\u2019ali\u00e9nation. Les \u00e9v\u00e9nements se d\u00e9roulent \u00e0 travers une s\u00e9rie de rencontres d\u00e9cisives, o\u00f9 le h\u00e9ros \u00e9prouve les contradictions de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et les limites de la perception humaine. Mahfouz fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au soufisme islamique \u00e0 travers la structure narrative, incarnant l\u2019id\u00e9e que le chemin vers la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 absolue est un voyage int\u00e9rieur individuel, ce que confirme l\u2019impossibilit\u00e9 d\u2019atteindre concr\u00e8tement Zaabal\u00e2w\u00ee. Le r\u00e9cit porte une critique acerbe de la modernit\u00e9 excessive, tout en r\u00e9habilitant les dimensions de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience spirituelle marginalis\u00e9e.
