This article explores caricature as a genre that accommodates a range of interpretative discourses. It serves as both a point of departure and convergence for various forms that evoke the possibilities of semantic construction, seeking realization in the realm of art and drawing. The caricature aims to reproduce facts and events through drawing and its various tools. Our objective is to uncover the latent meaning—the abstract face of a concrete world. We seek to trace the effects that the artist’s brush leaves on the self and to highlight the tools that govern caricature, linking the act of speaking with the act of depiction: word, voice, composition, meaning, lexical units, and iconic configurations that shape the subjects and worlds of the illustrations. Based on these general principles, we attempt to analyze a selection of cartoons related to the topic of COVID-19, reading them as a discourse of illness—emerging in diverse contexts and conditions—as a focal point where a series of utterances and descriptions are revealed through drawings, images, and words that reflect dreams, politics, ethics, and authority.
