The Sequential Semiotic Approach to Narrative Temporality: A Reading of Temporal Actualization in Tahar Rouainia’s Work

Abstract
This article combines both theoretical and practical dimensions to explore sequential semiotics and its application in analyzing narrative temporality within Algerian novelistic discourse, through the work of Tahar Rouainia. Drawing on the concepts developed by semiotician Vladimir Krysinski, the study aims to identify the mechanisms through which time is treated in the narrative structure. Using Waciny Laredj’s novel Drame de la septième nuit après les mille as a case study, the analysis engages with existing critical frameworks while assessing the extent to which sequential semiotics can effectively address the temporal component. Although some critics have questioned the adequacy of this approach and turned instead to other frameworks—such as Gérard Genette’s theory of temporality or elements of narrative semiotics—these alternatives underscore the diversity of methodologies available for analyzing time in literary texts.
